The Late in Life Writer: For All Things Be Grateful, Even Technology

I have always felt the importance of giving thanks. My health and that of all our family and friends become more important as we age. I am grateful that we can still do the things we enjoy and get around with little effort. I am grateful for the abundance of choices we have, along with the ability to make the best ones for ourselves. I have learned so much from every mistake and challenge. (even with technology)

As a children's book(s) author, I am grateful for all the wonderful people who have supported my efforts over the years as mentors, patrons of my titles, and those who come to learn the how and why that motivates me to write. I appreciate each one of you more than you know!

It pains me to see and hear of all the struggles people are facing. Having said this, I want to tell you that I am considering closing my business in the New Year, if not sooner. Our problems are far from overwhelming; however, I know many of you can no longer spend money on books when food on the table, mortgages, and/or medical bills are a priority. Do what is right for you and your family, first and always.

I do not have a "date certain" for closing www.third-careerpress.com but I am actively exploring the process. As it turns out, most things that are a part of the production of a book (i.e. printing, website, marketing, and even selling) have rapidly rising costs. For me, there is the additional issue of all the computer-related changes based on algorithms and AI in virtually every system and technology I must use. At my age (mid-70s), these types of required adaptations are frustrating, to say the least. I did not anticipate a full-time+ job in retirement, just to keep up with technology.

Many of my closest friends and writing tribe are suggesting I take a "time-out" before committing to closure. I am grateful for that advice. In addition to consulting with my brilliant marketing woman, Rebecca Paciorek, Blue Dot Digital Marketing, I reached out to my accountant for the "how-to" aspects so I won't miss any vital steps that might lead to a penalty. Honestly, it takes a lot to keep a business going, but now it looks like it will take a lot to shut one down too.

Still not sure if I will continue the status quo, perhaps with some changes, i.e.-making my books digitally available. I still have a strong desire to see kids with a book in hand, turning pages and enjoying what's in front of them. I would love to hear your thoughts on all this! How do your kids read? On Kindle? With a book in hand? Do you/they use the local library?

Please know how much I appreciate every one of you! We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving and the best of times ahead.

Sincerely,

Halina Schafer
